Research & Mining Career Services
Get a Step Ahead
Students of the School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources master real-world skills and develop professional connections that prepare them for successful careers, and it pays off.
Paid internships, corporate-sponsored design projects, career advisors, rotations in the San Xavier Underground Mine and industry-focused research are all staples of the undergraduate experience.
SMEMR students have a 100% job placement rate, and they are in enormous demand within the industry and government organizations.

Career-Defining Internships
Almost all SMEMR undergrads do paid summer internships, typically for course credit, with mineral resources companies. The school has a global network of partnerships, guaranteeing opportunities with some of the biggest movers in the industry.
Visit the U of A Engineering internship page for details on the program and tips for landing your dream job.
Real-World Research
Do hands-on research with visionary faculty leaders in the field and forward-thinking graduate students. You can join a faculty project or follow your own imagination via the University of Arizona’s undergraduate research portal.
Interdisciplinary Opportunities
With a heavy emphasis on education that unites multiple fields of knowledge, SMEMR encourages students to explore opportunities with our partners across campus. By bringing these complementary areas of knowledge together, you can design your own dream career.
Hone your business skills at the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship. Study global mining law at the James E. Rogers College of Law. Or combine other engineering studies to find unique solutions to modern industry challenges.
Student Design Projects
The UA Engineering Design Program is a crucial step to career readiness. This yearlong experience helps ensure students are ready for the future and opens doors to employers.
SMEMR seniors complete mining-specific capstone projects for industry clients. These efforts often result in real-world models and products, many of which are patented and commercialized.
When finished, you’ll present your project at Design Day, the biggest college event of the year. It’s an amazing opportunity to impress industry partners, get feedback on your work from professional industry judges, present your work to the public and media, and win cash prizes.
