San Xavier Underground Mine

The San Xavier Underground Mine is a one-of-a-kind, real-world training laboratory. Students, mining professionals and industry partners use the site for hands-on education and development of ultramodern technology.

Along with building the vital national mining workforce and serving as a tech proving ground, the mine conducts community outreach to teach the public about the importance of responsible mineral extraction in meeting the world’s growing resource demands.

A Unique Opportunity

Located on a 90-acre facility in Sahuarita, AZ, the four-level mine is 250 feet at its deepest, and it boasts four portals, including a vertical shaft and hoist. The site has been operated by the U of A since 1958 and owned by the university since 1975.

Elite Facilities and Research Labs

At SMEMR, ultramodern mineral processing, geomechanics, and mine ventilation labs support critical research.

The San Xavier Mine is home to industry-standard technology, next-generation concepts being put to the test, and working mining situations to hone best practices. Students train with simulation software and virtual reality to prepare for digitally-enabled mining operations at the Mine Information Technology Center.

Roll Up Your Sleeves and Get to Work

Training at the lab complements SMEMR courses and provides real experience for both future careers and current professionals. Working with the latest high tech gear, you will get experience in mine development, safety, unit operations and maintenance. Students can even hone their skills with weekly shifts in the mine. And hands-on industry training means everyone, from the new miner to the CEO, can be at the top of their game.

A Trusted Industry Proving Ground

Industry giants like Komatsu and Resolution Copper, federal and state agencies, and international mining organizations all partner with SMEMR to bring their ideas to the San Xavier Mine. Get hands-on education for your workforce, join world-renowned researchers to push the boundaries of current technology and practices, or test your latest gear in an easily accessible operating mine atmosphere.
