Longtime SMEMR supporter Timothy Snider, former president and chief operating officer of Phelps Dodge, secures one of the highest professional distinctions in engineering.

University of Arizona alumnus Timothy Snider was named to the National Academy of Engineering's 2026 class of members. The NAE recognized Snider for his work on low-cost methods for recovering metals from mineral deposits and his efforts to support academic excellence.

“It is an honor to be associated with the National Academy of Engineers,” he said. “I look forward to participating in the advancement of the nation’s mining industry.”,

Over a 50-year career, Snider promoted mining practices that leverage new technologies to improve mining efficiency and safety. In 2024, Snider and his wife, Rhonda, committed $1.5 million to SMEMR to expand hands-on learning and workforce development and to fund student scholarships.

“Tim exemplifies the values we instill in our students, including innovation, integrity and service,” said Kray Luxbacher, the Gregory H. and Lisa S. Boyce Leadership Chair and executive director of SMEMR. “His election reflects decades of dedication to incorporating new technology in the industry and mentoring the next generation.”
