Pioneering Sustainable Mineral Research: University of Arizona’s Isabel Barton Wins Scialog Award
The University of Arizona School of Mining & Mineral Resources is pleased to announce that Mining & Geological Engineering professor Dr. Isabel Barton is part of a cross-disciplinary team awarded funding through the inaugural Scialog: Sustainable Minerals, Metals, and Materials initiative.
The three-year initiative aims to spark advances in the mining, design, manufacture, and disposal of materials needed to achieve a more sustainable and low-carbon energy system. The 18 individual awards of $60,000 in direct costs will go to 16 scientists from colleges, universities, and research institutions in the United States and Canada.
Dr. Barton’s team is one of six awarded in this program, which aims to foster collaborative research for sustainable solutions in mineral and metal production. This recognition highlights the impact of UA’s faculty in advancing sustainable practices essential to a resource-efficient future. Supported by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and The Kavli Foundation, the Scialog initiative unites scientists from diverse fields to address critical sustainability challenges.
Dr. Barton’s selection underscores the University of Arizona’s leadership in pioneering research at the intersection of mining, sustainability, and environmental responsibility, positioning the institution at the forefront of innovation in sustainable resource management.
