Student Profile: Yash Sihag
Yash Sihag, an undergraduate student studying statistics and data science and information science, works as a researcher for the Geotechnical Center of Excellence. Learn more about his development with mining below:
Tell me a little about yourself and what you’re studying.
“I'm a senior doing a double major in statistics and data science and information science. Currently, I work as an undergraduate researcher at the Geotechnical Center of Excellence.”
What got you interested in the mining industry?
“I didn't really have a specific interest in the mining industry. I was looking for research opportunities where I could apply my data analysis skills and machine knowledge. When I was looking for jobs related to research, I found this GCE job, so that's how I got into mining.”
What has your experience been like working in an industry you’re new to?
"I really like the people I'm working with. The environment is really good, they’re always there to help you if you get stuck. I don't come from a mining background, so if I need help they will explain things to me.
What do your duties usually consist of?
“At first, it was kind of a dual role. I started as a learning and development student assistant and undergraduate researcher. First, I would assist in the facilitation of the professional courses run by GCE, and also help out in the research area. When school started, I talked with my boss since I had more interest in the research part, so now I work more on the research side and less on the courses.
What’s been the most meaningful part of working with the GCE?
“It’s been meaningful to have the real world experience of working in an industry and in a team based environment. I used to work mostly on my own stuff, but lately I've been in a team, so I have developed in many different ways. I've also developed a good interest in mining and related industries, so this might lead to a future career in mining research.”
What advice would you give to someone who’s interested in getting involved with mining?
“Curiosity is the best thing you can have. If you're curious about the mining industry, just talk to someone in the field and they would be happy to help you and to introduce you to the field.”
