ATTEND THE 2022 ARIZONA CONFERENCE AND CONNECT
Come meet Arizona faculty, staff and students at the SME Arizona Conference on December 4th and 5th, 2022 at JW Marriott Starr Pass Tucson Resort & Spa!
During this conference Alec Martin, graduate student in the Geosciences department, will be presenting, as will Dr. Julie Neilson, Director for the Center of Environmentally Sustainable Mining, and Julia Potter, Co-Director of the Geotechnical Center of Excellence.
Martin is a geology master's student under Dr. Mark Barton, putting the finishing touches on his master's thesis on Western Interior seaway sediments and their alteration at the Resolution porphyry copper deposit in Superior, AZ. He is beginning work on his PhD project (to officially begin in January) by interacting with several mining companies regarding Cu-sulfide trace elements for deportment studies. This also ties him into developments with the new Femto-LA-ICP-MS system at the group's disposal. He worked as a Mineralogy intern for Freeport this summer and is continuing involvement with them on a limited basis. Check out his technical session on December 5th from 1-3 pm.
Dr. Neilson’s presentation is entitled “Mine Waste Reclamation: Metrics of Ecosystem Regeneration.” She says, “Ecosystem regeneration on lands disturbed by mine operations is critically important following mine closure. UA Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining-industry collaborative research evaluates different management strategies to quantify and accelerate self-sustaining ecosystem establishment on diverse mine waste materials during mine site reclamation.”
