The Silicon Valley of Mining
Arizona is home to four of the five largest copper mines in the United States, numerous mining technology companies, and top mineral research institutions, all of which has earned our region the name “Silicon Valley of Mining.” It’s the best place on earth to educate students and create real-world impact in the field of mining and mineral resources.
The University of Arizona has a unique and powerful combination: A wide range of programs, a location in the heart of mining country, a world with a rising need for minerals, and the experience necessary to bring it all together under one roof.
We offer students what no other university can – vast sector experience and unmatched depth and breadth of disciplines combined with proximity to world-class operating mines, ore deposits, and leaders in mining and mineral resource technology.
Our Mining Roots Run Deep, and Our Expertise Is Vast
The University of Arizona has been a global leader in mining education since 1885, with nationally ranked Mining Engineering and Geoscience programs and numerous disciplines essential to mining, including economic geology, hydrology, business, environmental and social sciences, law, industrial hygiene, and a full range of engineering degrees, as well as unique resources like our student-run San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory.

Serving Our Hispanic Communities and Neighbors
Our location on the southern border puts us in the right place to serve as the gateway to Latin America. We are proud to have been the first public four-year university in Arizona named a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). This reflects our dedication to meeting the educational needs of our diverse communities and providing opportunities for everyone to succeed.
